foodshare
Yesterday, I had the chance to go to Foodshare, the food bank outside of Hartford where all of the meal programs in the area get their groceries from. Two of the cooks at Community Meals go every Monday. I loved it there! It was like food banks I've seen in D.C. but a lot smaller. We order staple foods (like hamburgers, chicken, etc.) on-line so we know they'll be waiting there each week, and we also pick anything we want from the rows of shelves with boxes and the huge walk-in fridge and freezer with of groceries donated from grocery stores. So we piled boxes and boxes of all different things onto hand carts and put them on a long conveyor belt to check-out; everything there is 16 cents a pound. It was fun to see how creative and resourceful the cooks are in coming up with meal ideas and choosing from whatever groceries happen to be available that week. We got about a dozen chocolate cream pies that will be dessert for lunch or dinner today (I'm trying to eat a lot less sugar lately but of course I'm excited about them anyway).
